Most rooms need a rug – a room without a rug can appear unwelcoming and unfinished. It will transform a room, introducing a sense of luxury; the colour, pattern and texture of the rug lend a feeling of comfort and personality to the room.

Below you will find approximate rug sizes available, which are available to purchase from our Richmond and Guildford Showrooms.

Living Room Rug Size Guide

Before choosing a rug, you must first understand its purpose. Do you want a rug that will be a real statement piece, or a more neutral design, which will blend seamlessly into the space, giving an overall tranquil appearance? Do you want it to unify a room or to define a space? If you are attempting to break up a room into different areas, a number of smaller rugs can do so beautifully. Before you start looking at rug, you need to measure the size of the room its for to try and work out the approximate space you have for a rug and any constraints such as side boards or door openings you have.

Go for the largest size you can afford as it gives a generous, calming effect to the room – Living Room A. It's great to be able to place furniture such as the sofa half on a rugLiving Room B, to give a wonderfully luxurious and flowing feel to the space.

Small rugs can look bitty and mean in the wrong space. A common solution is to have a rug that sits within the furniture, in front of sofas and chairs. In this case, the rug should be slightly longer or wider than the furniture, and not too far from the seatingLiving Room C .

If you want to unify a room, a large rug will do this effectivelyCorner Sofa Rug A. In this case, leave sufficient extra space around all the furniture so it does not appear 'perched' on the edge of the rug. Furniture around the perimeter of the room, such as sideboards and cupboards, are generally best left completely off the rug. You can opt for Corner Sofa Rug B or C below and have the rug just under the front legs of the sofa or a slight gap between the Sofa and the rug without needing to go right to the back of the sofa legs and beyond.

For aDining Room, a large rug under the table will deaden the sound in the room and bring colour, pattern and texture. Ideally, the rug should be in proportion to the table, and larger than it so that there is sufficient space to pull out a chair and sit down without the back legs coming off the rug.

The minimum that allows for this is 75cm (29"), so that the ideal size is generally at least 1.50m (59") larger than the table in each direction. Remember that the table and chairs will mostly obscure the centre of the rug, so the most important part of the design becomes the border.

Bedroom Rug Size Guide

For a bedroom, the rug is best placed underneath the bed, framing it but stopping short of the side tablesBedroom B. This allows for rug underfoot when one gets out of bed. For Larger Bedrooms a small rug can make a bedroom look small and its elements disconnected. When in doubt go for a bigger size to help tie everything together like Bedroom A. An alternative option is to have a smaller rug on either side of the bed and frontBedroom C and Bedroom D.

Colour
If you want to match the Rug with any curtains, cushions, sofa or carpet its ideal if you bring along a small sample or swatch of the fabric, this will help you select a rug in the color you want or if you are not sure come in store and with a massive selection to choose from you will surely find something inspirational!

Rug Care
Once you've found rug perfection, you'll want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. If you spend just a few minutes per week preening and grooming your rug, you'll keep that showroom appeal!

Vacuuming
A chore that should be exclusive to Cinderella. However, If you hoover your rug every other week with a good suction hoover it will prevent dirt and grit filtering into the pile and keep your RUG looking fabulous.

If you have opted for a pure wool rug, expect some natural shedding, however long. Stray fibres should be cut even with the rug surface, never pull a stray thread. Give your rug a chance of direction, rotate your rug weekly, so that its not affected by direct sunlight and receives the same amount of wear and tear evenly.

Nasty Stuff (Spills)
Oooops! Its going to happen, at some point wine, tea or juice will be spilt on your RUG. After you've cursed yourself (or others!), act quickly. Grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and dab the spilt liquid. Do not rub, this will cause the spillage to spread, dab with carpet cleaner until the stain has been removed, Pat excess moisture with a paper towel and allow this to dry, on stubborn stains, particularly dark stains on a light coloured rug, the cleaning process will need to be repeated.
Never use a spot cleaner on a wool rug this will 'set' the stain, making it impossible to remove.

Rug Grippers For Carpet
Get yourself a Rug Underlay and make sure your RUG doesn't slip and slide with anti-slip underlay for Carpet – Wood – Tiles. Available in store and Online.
